United Airlines said that it had suspended flights from Newark to Mumbai following a safety review in light of recent events in Iran, Reuters reported, citing the U.S. air carrier's website. This is being done as a precautionary measure by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The FAA order comes after Iran shot down an unarmed RQ-4 Global Hawk surveillance drone on Thursday that was "operating in the vicinity of civil air routes above the Gulf of Oman", according to the FAA's guidance.
"There were numerous civil aviation aircraft operating in the area at the time of the intercept", the FAA warned.
A host of major airlines said on Friday that their planes are no longer flying over the Strait of Hormuz, after Iranian forces shot down a USA drone in the area.
After the DGCA's decision, Air India's Chairman and Managing Director Ashwani Lohani said, "No substantial effect on Air India flights".
- Australia's Qantas said on Friday that it was adjusting flight paths over the Middle East to avoid the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman until further notice.

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways in a statement released to Gulf News said it was also re-routing relevant flights. After Malaysia Airline Flight 17 - a passenger flight - was shot down in 2014 while it was flying over eastern Ukraine, all countries rely on the advice of the U.S., the UK, France and Germany to avoid airspace risk.
The development came hours after United Airlines suspended flights between New Jersey's Newark airport and Mumbai airport.
Dutch carrier KLM also confirmed media reports that its planes will be avoiding parts of the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman in the wake of the FAA ban.
Several airlines went further in their precautions than mandated by the FAA.
Trump said he was concerned about the loss of life and did not believe military strikes that result in casualties were a proportionate response to Iran's actions.
Iran has also announced it will soon exceed global agreed limits on its nuclear programme.
