Scarce details were made public Thursday, but four of the new counts charge Kelly with aggravated criminal sexual assault - a Class X felony that carries six to 30 years in prison on conviction.
Kelly was already facing 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse involving four women years ago, three of whom were minors when the alleged abuse occurred.

In March, Lanita Carter identified herself as one of the four women in the Chicago case, and the only one who was an adult when the alleged abuse occurred.
Should the court find Kelly guilty, he faces a minimum sentence of 30 years imprisonment and a maximum of 60 years for each of the aggravated criminal sex assault charges.

Neither a rep for Kelly nor a spokesperson for the Cook County State Attorney's Office immediately returned PEOPLE's request for comment.
"These are the same conduct, just charged differently, same alleged victim, same time frame, same facts", Greenberg said on Twitter.
She says that while working as Kelly's hairdresser, the singer tried to force her to perform oral sex. Apparently the initials of the victim in the latest case are the same initials as those printed on court documents in cases that have been filed previously.
"If I die tomorrow, I know that I told the truth", she told CBS News.
"We'll see what the charges are, and we'll proceed accordingly", Greenberg reportedly told the Sun-Times. She was underage at the time, extending the statute of limitations for bringing charges to 20 years from her 18th birthday, they wrote.
