New Japanese emperor Naruhito, took up his post on Wednesday, a day after his father gave up the throne in the country's first abdication in two centuries.
"I will act according to the Constitution and fulfill my responsibility as the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people of Japan, while always turning my thoughts to the people and standing with them", he said.
"The curtain has gone up on a new era that will be filled with hope", said Hiroshi Takahashi, 78, outside his "wagashi" traditional Japanese candies shop.
With Naruhito as the new emperor, the Japanese imperial family is left with just three heirs to the throne - one of whom is 83 - a situation which could reignite debate on the monarchy's males-only succession. When national broadcaster NHK conducted a survey in 2009, 77 percent of the public supported female imperial succession.
The former Emperor Akihito told a press conference ahead of his birthday in December that he felt "a certain kinship with Korea", referencing an ancient book that mentioned a family tie between the ancient Japanese imperial family and the Paekche, a kingdom from early Korean history. He shared his congratulations and appreciation for the close relationship between Japan and Morocco, adding he was looking forward to working with Emperor Naruhito to make the relationship even stronger.
Interestingly, next in line for the Japanese throne is not Crown Prince Naruhito's daughter Aiko but Naruhito's brother, Akishino' son, nine-year old Hisahito.
On May 4, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will greet well-wishers gathered at the Imperial Palace six times during the day, making their first public appearance.

"I hope the new emperor will be like the Heisei Emperor (Akihito), who cherishes peace", said Takayori Kobayakawa, a 71-year-old retiree who came from Shizuoka, central Japan.
Japanese Emperor Akihito announced his abdication at a palace ceremony on Tuesday in his final address, as the nation embraced the end of his 30-year reign. He is now known as emperor emeritus.
