The Wall Street Journal reported Monday evening that Barr has tapped CT U.S. attorney John Durham to help examine the origins of the FBI counterintelligence investigation into Russian Federation interference in the 2016 election, which served as the pretext for Special Counsel Robert Mueller's appointment.
Barr recently appointed U.S. attorney John Durham to examine the special counsel's intelligence collecting methods to determine whether they were "lawful and appropriate". The person could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke Tuesday to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The appointment of John Durham, a Republican and US attorney in CT, comes a month after Barr told members of Congress that he believed "spying did occur" on the Trump campaign. But the person said Barr remains directly involved in the probe.
Amid a broad effort to discredit Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the FBI, Trump and his allies have accused law enforcement officials of spying on his campaign and called for an investigation into the origins of the Mueller probe, which started at the FBI in mid-2016. His report, following an 18-month investigation, reaffirmed the FBI based its probe of the Trump campaign on legitimate factors, including revelations that a Trump campaign adviser, George Papadopoulos, told a foreign diplomat he was informed that the Russians had stolen Democratic emails.
Durham also helped prosecute former Republican Connecticut Gov. John Rowland, who was charged with accepting $107,000 in gifts from people doing business with the state, and not paying taxes.
When asked during testimony before a Senate appropriations subcommittee, Wray said that "spying" is "not the term I would use".

Then, in 2008, Attorney General Michael Mukasey (under Republican President George W. Bush) asked Durham to investigate the destruction of videotapes by the Central Intelligence Agency in 2005, which documented the torture of terrorism suspects.
