Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will mark the end of a new series of movies that was first introduced to the audience in 2015.
The annual Star Wars fan convention, Star Wars Celebration, officially kicked off in Chicago on Friday (April 12) with the anticipated first look at J.J. Abrams's Star Wars: Episode IX, now formally titled Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. "The movie doesn't pick up immediately after the last film", Abrams revealed.
"Princess Leia lives in this film in way that is mind-blowing to me", Abrams said. " We are not just looking at another trilogy, we're really looking at the next ten years or more".
George Lucas involvement in the Star Wars films has been remote ever since he sold Lucasfilm to Disney back in 2012. The team at Lucasfilm have been incredible collaborators, helping us explore and further develop this part of the timeline where the Empire is at the height of its power and any remaining Jedi are in hiding. Step aside "The Last Jedi" and witness the awesomeness of (*drumroll*) "The Rise of Skywalker".
"This movie is about this new generation and what they've inherited, the light and the dark", Abrams added.
The largest ovations came for Kelly Marie Tran, who portrays mechanic Rose Tico, and Billy Dee Williams, who returns to the saga as the con artist Lando Calrissian.

Or could Skywalker be the common name for heroic Force-wielders who take up the mantle from the Jedi? Second Sister is actually a nice nod to the collaboration happening between different Star Wars departments because that character has already been teed up in Marvel Comics' Darth Vader #19.
