President Donald Trump, who Netanyahu featured on campaign billboards to highlight their close relationship, phoned to congratulate him on his re-election, the Israeli leader said, adding that he thanked his American ally for "tremendous support for Israel".
In a series of appearances before Congress, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo refused to say whether the plan would reaffirm Washington's decades-old backing of a Palestinian state, saying only that past plans have failed.
But they divided the centre-left in Israel, so it was easier for Netanyahu to defeat them, because the Labour Party was left alone, isolated, the bloc of left [-wing] Meretz too, and then this Blue and White tried to bring votes from the right-wing, having some personalities like Moshe Ya'alon, the former minister of Defence who came from the right-wing, but it didn't succeed.
It's a little in the weeds, but the process for putting together a government in Israel can lead a prime minister as much as the prime minister might try to lead the process.
Gantz, who entered politics last December, said that the fact that the newly-formed and little-known party gained 35 seats shows that the Israeli public is eager to replace Netanyahu's regime.
Netanyahu and President Trump have cultivated a steady alliance since Trump took office in 2017, and Trump has awarded the prime minister with politically helpful decisions to move the U.S. Embassy in the country from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and to formally recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Earlier that night, Gantz had claimed victory. "I'd like to congratulate him on a well-thought-out race".

He also set the United States a deadline of "until the end of this year" to demonstrate that new talks could be more productive. Denuclearization talks, however, have been stalled since the breakdown of their second summit in Hanoi late February.
The election was seen as a referendum on the veteran prime minister, who has built a reputation as guarantor of Israel's security and economic growth, but whose divisive right-wing populism and alleged corruption led to calls for change.
One of the major factors hastening Netanyahu's victory was the low voter turnout among Israel's Arab residents, which was below 50 percent. Whilst this does not appear to have damaged his results in the election, it could seriously compromise his future, forcing him to dedicate precious time and efforts to emerging unscathed from the bribery, fraud and breach of trust cases opened against him by the attorney general, Avichai Mendelblit.
Breaking with decades of USA policy and worldwide consensus, Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital in 2017 and Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights last month.
The results mean Netanyahu is heading for a record fifth term in office and would become Israel's longest-serving prime minister. Palestinians seek a state there and in the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The vote had been expected to be close as Netanyahu faced potential corruption charges.
Commenting on the election, Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said: "Israelis have voted to preserve the status quo".
