The U.S. will be the first country to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan, which the rest of the global community regards as disputed territory occupied by Israel whose status should be determined by negotiations between Israel and Syria. "We have a specific position, based on resolutions, on this issue", Aboul Gheit said on Thursday.
US officials are preparing an official document that would recognize the Golan Heights as a sovereign Israeli territory, which US President Donald Trump is likely to sign next week, Reuters reported on Friday.
The European Union on Friday stressed that it would not change its position on the Golan and does not consider it a part of Israeli territory.
Mr Trump's statement on Thursday marked a dramatic shift in USA policy over the status of a disputed area that Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East conflict and annexed in 1981 - a move not recognised internationally.
In a meeting earlier with Interior Minister Raya Al-Hassan, Pompeo "discussed regional and internal security challenges facing Lebanon and how the United States can help support the interior ministry's efforts".
Against this backdrop of hostility towards the US move, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Beirut where he took aim at Israel's main regional foes - Hezbollah and its backer Iran - and declared the success of USA sanctions against them.
Pompeo's events with Netanyahu included a visit to the Western Wall that made him the highest-ranking USA official to visit the Jewish holy site with any Israeli leader and appeared to further signal the Trump administration's support for Israel's control of the contested city.
"France does not recognise the Israeli annexation of 1981", the ministry said in a daily briefing, adding that U.N. Security Council resolutions had recognised the annexation as null and void. But Trump said his decision was a long time coming and it wasn't about Netanyahu and Israeli politics.

They drank almost 24 ounces of tea a day - about three tea cups - and preferred it to be 140 degrees Fahrenheit, said the study. Doctors have an easy tip on what to do before diving into a steaming cup of tea - let it cool.
"Changing the status of the Golan Heights by bypassing the Security Council a direct violation of United Nations decisions", Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. Russian Federation also made it clear Friday morning that Trump's decision violated United Nations resolutions.
God may have sent Trump to save Israel, he claimed, representing the evangelical leanings of the administration.
USA sanctions on Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah are working, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday on a visit to Beirut, calling on Lebanon to stand up to the Shi'ite group which he accused of "criminality, terror and threats".
When Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, he said it did not determine the city's final borders.
"You can imagine what would have happened if Israel were not in the Golan", Netanyahu told Pompeo.
"The Syrian nation is more determined to liberate this precious piece of Syrian national land through all available means", the source said, adding that Trump's statement was "irresponsible" and showed "contempt" for global law.
But for decades, top US officials have refrained from visiting the site with Israeli leaders to present a sense of impartiality in deciding eventual control of Jerusalem in the years of unresolved discussions over the creation of a Palestinian state. The Palestinians have already severed ties with the US over Washington's Jerusalem policies.
Pompeo said, "The Israelis and Palestinians live side by side. They're going to fail again", Netanyahu said.
