Cindy McCain, the wife of the late Sen.
For years, Trump has belittled the former Vietnam War POW and 2008 Republican presidential nominee, once remarking to an audience in July 2015 that he likes "people that weren't captured".
A trio of senators, from the most senior to the greenest freshman, defied Trump's apparently unprovoked declaration that he's "not a fan" of the decorated Vietnam War veteran because McCain cast the deciding vote against the Republican repeal of national health care.
His Republican colleague, Senator Lindsay Graham, called McCain "an American hero" and said Mr Trump's comments "hurt him more than they hurt the legacy of Senator McCain". First, Trump did not create the Veterans Choice Program - he just signed a law a year ago that would streamline the V.A.'s Community Care Program.
Mrs. McCain's ill-advised tweet followed days of tweet-shots between President Trump and the McCains' daughter, Meghan. The loss of the six-term senator past year to an aggressive brain tumor is still an open wound for many Americans, who liked the longtime senator's directness and independence as well as his military service.
It isn't entirely clear what Trump is talking about here, but it could be a reference to the permission he gave for military transportation of McCain's body from Arizona to D.C. and for military pallbearers, band support and a horse.
Zimbabwe: Death toll from tropical cyclone climbs to 65
Speaking on Radio Mocambique, President Filipe Nyusi said he had flown over the affected region, where two rivers had overflowed. In Zimbabwe , at least 98 people have died and 217 people are missing in the east and south, the government said .
"Spreading the fake and totally discredited Dossier 'is unfortunately a very dark stain against John McCain.' Ken Starr, Former Independent Counsel", Trump tweeted.
"My father was his kryptonite in life, he was his kryptonite in death", Meghan McCain said, adding that she thought Trump's life was "pathetic".
He also dug into McCain's now-famous vote against a repeal of the Affordable Care Act. The fact that Trump can not, and even now insists on telling vicious lies about McCain to anyone who will listen, is a national embarrassment. Some of them, like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.), just seemed like tributes to the deceased lawmaker.
Mrs. McCain's share appears to have taken the war to a whole new level. Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson stands out as one of the few to sharply rebuke the president's remarks.
"I look forward to soon re-introducing my legislation re-naming the Senate Russell Building after American hero, Senator John McCain", he tweeted. "You'd better love me, I kept this place open", Trump said. Isakson also criticized Trump in a conversation with The Bulwark.
It is fair to ask: Is sharing this crude and appalling Tweet received by Cindy McCain unacceptable and in bad taste, and does it only keep the Trump message alive and potentially more influential. However, he expressed opposition to naming the Russel Senate Office Building after McCain, saying that the proposal by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to do so was "playing politics".
