The president said he intends to leave it up to Attorney General William P. Barr and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, to determine the course of any investigations into how the Russian Federation probe came about.
Although Mueller could not establish Trump or his campaign "conspired or coordinated with" the Russian government, according to Barr's letter, the poll finds the American people continue to view the issue through partisan lenses.
Pelosi said she found Barr's decision to write the letter "arrogant".
The Republican letter said, "Your actions both past and present are incompatible with your duty as Chairman of this Committee, which alone in the House of Representatives has the obligation and authority to provide effective oversight of the US intelligence community".
"You might say that's all okay, you might say that's just what you need to do to win, but I don't think it's okay", said Schiff. "These are sick people and there has to be accountability because it is all lies and they know it's lies".
Trump takes victory lap; Dems still seek full Mueller report
Trump also said he had not thought about pardoning anyone convicted or who pleaded guilty in the Mueller probe. "For the president to say he is completely exonerated directly contradicts the words of Mr.
Outside the hearing room, the main battle continued over releasing Mueller's still-confidential report.
Attorney General William Barr, empowered by Justice Department regulations to decide how much of the special counsel's report to make public, on Sunday released his four-page summary of Mueller's findings. But here's what I would say in all seriousness, Mueller was given the ability to complete his job without political interference.
He pointed to Trump welcoming Russia to hack Hillary Clinton's emails, Trump's son meeting with Russians in Trump Tower seeking "dirt" on Clinton, and Trump's national security advisor appointee secretly conferring with Russia's ambassador about sanctions, then lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about it. "And I'm president, and they're not".
But now, the GOP is preparing to take their assault on the press to a new level.
"The president has now an opportunity for weeks, it sounds like, to do these victory laps, " said Cummings, noting that Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, is among those headed to jail as a result of the probe. "The Department of Justice should not be involved in a cover-up of what's actually in the report". Now, he plans to vote for Trump in 2020, because from his perspective the president has done what he said he would do. "The president said, 'Just let it go, ' and that's what's going to happen", Graham said. That was followed Monday by six Democratic committee chairs sending a letter to Barr to demand that the report be submitted to Congress by April 2.
