Ethiopia Airlines released a statement stating they had lost contact with the flight just six minutes after it took off.
"Boeing is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the passengers and crew on Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, a 737 MAX 8 airplane".
"It I believed that there were 149 passengers and 8 crew members on board the flight but we are now confirming the details of the passenger manifest for the flight", reads a statement from Ethiopian Airlines.
The Planespotters civil aviation database shows that the Boeing 737-8 MAX was delivered to Ethiopian Airlines in mid-November.
Safety experts cautioned against drawing too many comparisons between the two crashes until more is known about Sunday's disaster.
It has a good safety record and the newest fleet of planes on the African continent, according to its website. "The villagers said that it was a plane crash, and we rushed to the site".
The Boeing 737 plane took off from Addis Ababa at 8:38 AM local time, and crashed shortly after at 8:44 AM.

The aircraft, flight number ET 302, went down near Bishoftu, southeast of Addis Ababa.
The crash occurred around 31 miles south of the capital, shortly after taking off, the airline said. The carrier had been using five of the planes and awaiting delivery of 25 more.
Kenya lost 32 people, more than any country.
"There are no survivors onboard the flight, which carried passengers from 33 countries", said state-run Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, quoting an unidentified source at the airline.
The crash shattered more than two years of relative calm in African skies, where travel had always been chaotic.
GebreMariam said they have not yet determined the cause of the crash. ET-AVJ had over 1,000 hours with the airline since delivery.
The last fatal Ethiopian Airlines passenger plane crash was in 2010 when all 90 on board were killed when the aircraft crashed minutes after take-off from Beirut.
