Just weeks after he was released by his Canadian Football League team and essentially banned from signing anywhere else, the former Heisman Trophy victor gets yet another shot to show that he has something left in the tank. No, it's not the NFL.
"We are pleased to welcome Johnny Manziel to Alliance of American Football, which we've always described as a league of opportunity for talented players to launch or revitalize their pro football careers", league co-founder Bill Polian said in a statement Saturday night.
After investigating the matter at hand, and consorting with Manziel's agent, the troubled quarterback was placed on the AAF waiver wire where he was ultimately snatched up by the Memphis Express after the highest seed relinquished their privileges in the process, that being the San Antonio Commanders managed by former Super Bowl Winner Daryl Johnston. Express quarterback Zach Mettenberger was injured Saturday and unable to return to the team's 22-9 loss at Salt Lake and his status is uncertain. For the Brown, he started eight games and passed for 1,675 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Manziel became one of the most recognizable names in football during a Heisman Trophy-winning campaign at Texas A&M, leading the Aggies to an 11-2 record and an upset of the eventual national-champion Alabama Crimson Tide.
NWS issues flash flood emergency in Fremont
As areas up and down the Missouri River brace for the worst, the threat for flooding may not be over anytime soon. The chance the river will reach major flood stage in Fargo increased from 50 percent last week to 90 percent.
Manziel was a first-round draft pick by Cleveland, but quickly fizzled out there. The Express next plays vs. Birmingham on March 24 in Memphis.
Memphis is coached by Hall of Famer and former National Football League coach Mike Singletary, so it's worth wondering how well he'll mesh with Manziel. Manziel also ran for 215 yards on 29 carries as Montreal (5-13) missed the CFL playoffs.
The league welcomed Manziel in a tweet, which he retweeted. He was arrested in 2016 on a domestic violence charge, which was later dropped in exchange for his undergoing counseling.
Manziel's CFL action was his first in pro football since December 2015.
