On Wednesday, a new filing by the Department of Justice revealed that a pro-Russian Twitter account based in Russia gained access to and altered non-public information from a criminal probe in order to launch a disinformation campaign targeting Robert Mueller's investigation.
On February 16, the US Justice Department said that the United States had indicted 13 Russian nationals and three entities, including Concord Management, for allegedly trying to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election. Concord is alleged to have funded the operation of the Internet Research Agency, a Russian troll farm that spread divisive content to us audiences on social media as part of broader effort to meddle in the 2016 vote.
"Unwarranted disclosure of that information overseas, in a country adverse to this litigation, would allow that country and actors in that country to learn of these techniques and adjust their conduct, thus undermining USA national security interests, including investigations into the conduct of those foreign actors", the special counsel's filing says. You can view all the files Mueller had about the IRA and Russian collusion.
The special counsel said that Concord should not be given such sensitive material because of alleged misuse in October by an unknown party of "non-sensitive" materials already in Concord's possession as a result of the normal discovery process that litigants use to share information during a court case.
Pentagon chief says Taliban talks have been 'encouraging'
Simultaneously a statement released from the Afghan Taliban also reiterated what Ambassador Khalilzad in his tweets had said. The Taliban has so far refused to recognize the legitimacy of the USA -backed government in Kabul, a major sticking point.
"We stopped counting how many threats we were getting every day", the press service for the St. Petersburg court system said, according to local reports. "We are like hundreds of others, but we are the one and only who got the Special Counsel Mueller database", the message from @HackingRedstone read.
The prosecutors stopped short of accusing Concord of leaking the material, but they argue that the company's request to have sensitive new evidence sent to Russian Federation "unreasonably risks the national security interests of the United States".
Acting US Attorney General Matthew Whitaker on Monday confirmed that Mueller's investigation is close to completion. The Kremlin denies election interference and President Trump denies there was any collusion, calling the inquiry a political witch hunt. Stone, 64, was charged in a seven-count indictment unsealed in D.C. federal court last week charging him with lying to Congress, obstruction and witness tampering. They say Trump directed his personal lawyer Michael Cohen to make illegal hush-money payments to two women as a way to quash potential sex scandals during the campaign. The company pleaded not guilty in May.
