"I have never been more depressed about moving forward than right now", said Graham Thursday.
And according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted between January 8 and 11, 53 percent of Americans blame Trump and congressional Republicans for the shutdown, compared to 29 percent who blame congressional Democrats and 13 percent who blame both. But to understand that plan you would have to understand the fact that I won the election, and I promised safety and security for the American people.
The last week has been contentious between Republicans and Democrats, as witnessed Wednesday when Trump walked out of a White House meeting with congressional leadership after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the president "no" she would not support funding a border wall.
In his typical carrot-and-stick approach, Trump offered to compromise on the specifics of his demand for $5.7 billion for border wall construction but also threatened to shut down the southern border and/or use executive power to build the wall without funding appropriation from Congress.
"Before he pulls the plug on the legislative option, and I think we're nearly there, I would urge him to open up the government for a short period of time, like three weeks, before he pulls the plug, see if we can get a deal", Graham said.
After meeting with Trump on Friday, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC said it was clear to him and the president that "Democrats don't want to make a deal and will never support border wall/barriers".
"Stop harming our country and our economy and let's make our best efforts because we all agree we need to invest more in border security", Coons said.

Thomas had four bogeys, three of which were sandwiched in between one more birdie and an eagle to close out the round. However, his bunker shot got the ideal bounce off the green and one more off the flagstick for an impressive ending.

A later tweet said damage from "Drugs, Crime and so much that is bad" were worse for the United States than the government shutdown.
The senator added that Trump might be willing to reach an agreement that would include border wall funding and protections for beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, as well as for those receiving temporary protected status. Roughly 800,000 government workers missed a paycheck on Friday.
Mr Trump continued to blame Democrats for the impasse.
Correspondents say pressure is building on Mr Trump as the dispute drags on, with opinion polls showing more Americans blame him for the shutdown than they do the Democrats.
Graham said that in his conversation with Trump, the president indicated he would support "wall plus", meaning other immigration policies that so far congressional leaders in both parties haven't embraced and are seen as likely to further complicate the talks.
But some in the White House are trying to apply the brakes.
"I think history will show that Donald Trump, the supposed great dealmaker... that business schools and management consultants will look back for years and say, this was the most inept negotiation", Warner said. I will declare a national emergency.
"You get people ... saying walls are immoral", Trump said, after ticking off a litany of crimes committed both by and against immigrants.
