They're saying Hangouts will disappear in 2020 although Google has offered some a half-hearted denial saying "users of consumer Hangouts users will be somehow "upgraded" to Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet".
Slamming the reporting as shoddy, Scott Johnston, Realtime Comms product lead in G Suite at Google (Hangouts Meet & Chat, Google Voice) in a string of tweets said that there have been "no decisions made about when Hangouts will be shut down".
While it might not be as popular as some of the other services from Google, Hangouts is still widely used.
While consumers may lose the well-known chat app, Hangouts will live on for enterprise users as Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet.
Facebook's Zuckerberg fails to attend Commons fake news hearing
After the hearing, the representatives from nine parliaments signed a declaration calling for global rules to govern the internet. The documents contain revelations Facebook has been fighting to keep out of the public domain, The Observer newspaper reported .
Besides, Reuters recently reported that European Union antitrust regulators have asked Google's rivals if the internet search giant unfairly demotes local search competitors, according to a questionnaire seen by Reuters, a move which could lead to a fourth case against the Alphabet unit. The company has also abandoned Allo, which means it won't have a messaging platform equal to Hangouts once it shuts down, unless they come up with yet another messaging platform, which knowing Google could happen any time.
Furthermore, it is expected that Google could unveil new messaging apps, replacing Google Hangouts. Google never revealed the total number of Hangouts users though. While Hangouts is still available on the Google Play Store and as part of Gmail, Google's webmail service, recent reviews of Hangouts have been anything but great.
It looks as though Hangouts will join a growing list of Google chat products to bite the dust. Recently, the company also shut down Google+ because of lackluster performance. What is a suitable alternative?
