He admitted to making false statements in 2017 to the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence about a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.
His comments made clear that his communications with Trump about the project were much more frequent than he had suggested.
Trump said his pledge not to conclude new deals only applied after he had been elected and inaugurated.

The Washington Post reported past year that Cohen had emailed Dmitry Peskov, Putin's spokesman, seeking his help in advancing a stalled Trump Tower development project in Moscow at the same time Trump was running for president. He said that he did not end up doing the Trump Tower project, but that he was within his rights to conduct business during the presidential campaign.
Mueller charged Cohen with purposely lying about the date the project ended in order to "give the false impression that the Moscow Project ended before 'the Iowa caucus and ... the very first primary, ' in hopes of limiting the ongoing Russian Federation investigations".
Cohen did agree to travel to Russian Federation in connection with the Trump Tower Moscow project "and took steps in contemplation of [Trump's] possible travel to Russia", according to court papers.

In exchange for pleading guilty and continuing to cooperate with Mueller, he may hope to receive a lighter sentence than he otherwise would.
Mueller is investigating whether any Trump associates had advance knowledge of WikiLeaks' plans.
In Washington, Democratic lawmakers pounced on Cohen's latest plea to call for the Mueller probe to be allowed run its course unimpeded. Sentencing has been set for December 12.
He pleaded guilty to a slew of financial crimes, including campaign finance violations stemming from hush money payments Cohen made to women on Trump's behalf.
