Cable also identified another file deletion scenario involving redirection of Known Folders to OneDrive storage whereby contents of the original default directory were erased if they weren't moved.
The Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) was made available on October 2nd but hadn't yet been pushed through Windows' automatic update system.
"While we can not guarantee the outcome of any file recovery work, if you have manually checked for updates and believe you have an issue with missing files, please minimise your use of the affected device and contact us directly", Cable said, tendering an apology "for any impact these issues may have had on any of our customers".
"Prior to re-releasing the October 2018 Update our engineering investigation determined that a very small number of users lost files during the October 2018 Update", stated the Microsoft announcement.
At least 11 dead, many wounded in Haiti natural disaster
Rescue workers in Haiti said they were not looking for any more victims, although residents appeared to be jolted by the shake. In the town of Gros-Morne, one bed was covered in rubble, while the exterior walls of some homes were visibly cracked.
According to Microsoft, only one one-hundredth of a single percent of people who manually updated to version 1809 experienced data loss. This is the feature that lets you move a known folder like C:\Users\Name\Downloads to D:\Downloads, for example.
"If you have a Microsoft store in your neighbourhood you can visit it for a fix as well; perhaps you will be their first actual customer!" For example, the user changed the location property of the documents folder from c:\users\username\documents to another folder. The company also states it will provide an update as soon as a fixed version of the Windows 10 October 2018 will be rolled out again.
Microsoft enabled new feedback functionality today that adds options to classify impact and severity of the reported issue. Microsoft is working with them to recover the lost files, but it isn't offering any guarantees that their data will get restored.
Windows 10 1809 won't be broadly released until early adopters in the Windows Insider program have tested the revised update and provided feedback to Microsoft.
