The $20 billion, 34-mile-long bridge will directly connect Zhuhai and Hong Kong for the first time and shorten the trip from Hong Kong International Airport to Zhuhai, the South China Morning Post reported.
On Tuesday in the mainland city of Zhuhai, Xi declared the span officially open as digital fireworks exploded on a screen behind him and officials ticked off another made-in-Chinese world record. Earlier, travelling from Zhuhai to Hong Kong took over three hours, but now the travel time will be cut to 30 minutes.
The project required 420,000 tonnes (470,400 U.S. tons) of steel, which is roughly equivalent to 60 Eiffel Towers.
Dubbed a mega infrastructure project, the 55-km HKZM bridge which includes a seven-km underwater tunnel was inaugurated within weeks of the opening of the high-speed railway link between Beijing and Hong Kong.
And the event looked tailor-made for a long-winded reflection on China's increasingly successful exercise of soft power, its sheer engineering audacity and the political genius of building a 55-kilometer crossing that continues to grow the mainland's security apparatus and authority on both the semi-autonomous gambling enclave of Macau and the city-state financial powerhouse of Hong Kong.
The bridge is a symbolic link between Hong Kong and mainland China. Over the construction period, 19 workers died and dozens were injured, falling into the sea below after a work platform collapsed.
The bridge, surrounding link roads and artificial islands cost a staggering $20bn to build - the main bridge alone cost $6.92bn. The bridge, the world's longest cross-sea project, which has a total length of 55 kilometers (34 miles), will have opening ceremony in Zhuhai on October 23. "Most people will need to travel the bridge on coaches and buses", the Singapore-based Channel News Asia reported.
According to Chinese media, authorities will use facial recognition systems to detect yawning drivers on the bridge, as a safety measure.

The lack of parking was also a concern for Macau locals.
And drivers will have to change which side of the road they are on at the crossing. The area is also known for strong typhoons each year and rare marine species including Chinese white dolphins.
Some Hong Kong social media comments accused Lam of "selling out" to Xi and portrayed her as Piglet to his Winnie the Pooh, as she was wearing an all-pink outfit.
The bridge, which snakes across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong's Lantau island and passes Macau's glitzy casinos, will begin operations on Wednesday when some bus services begin.
Aside from making more tourist sights accessible to travellers, the bridge is an attraction in itself.
In fact, the bridge's maintenance costs would already take away a third of this income.
For other Chinese executives, it symbolically affirms China's grasp on Hong Kong - even if the views are impressive.
Until now residents of Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong have used ferries to zip between the three cities - something detractors said illustrated why the costly bridge was unnecessary.
